Job Title: Refrigeration Technician – Grocery Retail
Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced and dedicated Refrigeration Technician to support the installation, maintenance, and repair of commercial refrigeration systems in grocery store environments. This role is critical to maintaining product integrity, minimizing energy usage, and ensuring compliance with food safety standards. The technician will work on walk-in coolers, freezers, open cases, refrigerated display units, and HVAC systems common in retail grocery locations.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, repair, and maintain refrigeration and HVAC systems in retail grocery locations, including rack systems, self-contained units, and refrigerated cases.
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance to reduce downtime and ensure equipment reliability.
- Troubleshoot system performance issues such as temperature fluctuations, refrigerant leaks, and electrical malfunctions.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety codes, refrigeration standards, and food safety regulations (e.g., HACCP).
- Perform refrigerant recovery and recharge in accordance with EPA Section 608 guidelines.
- Maintain accurate records of service calls, repairs, refrigerant usage, and parts inventory.
- Collaborate with store managers, facility teams, and contractors to schedule repairs and minimize service disruption.
- Conduct seasonal system tune-ups and energy audits to optimize performance and reduce operational costs.
- Respond to emergency service calls after hours as part of the on-call rotation.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical certification in refrigeration or HVAC preferred.
- EPA Section 608 Universal Certification required.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in commercial refrigeration, ideally within grocery, retail, or food service environments.
- Experience working with rack refrigeration systems and digital control systems (e.g., Emerson, Danfoss, or CPC).
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills for electrical and mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with regulatory and safety standards in food retail, including proper case temperatures and defrost cycles.
- Ability to work independently across multiple store locations with minimal supervision.
- Valid driver’s license; travel required within designated territory.
Working Conditions
- Work performed in cold storage areas, rooftops, mechanical rooms, and retail sales floors.
- Physical demands include lifting equipment, working in tight spaces, and climbing ladders.
- On-call support required for nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with CO₂ refrigeration systems (transcritical or subcritical) is a plus.
- OSHA 10/30 certification.
- Familiarity with store energy management systems (EMS/BMS).
